Terbium Tb Terbium metal is silver gray metal, which is a kind of rare earth metal. There are two production method, distillation and reduction. Distilled terbium is dendritic with metal luster. Reduced terbium is dark gray without metal luster. Distillation method get higher purity than reduction method. It tend to corrode by air when heating, but extremely slow at room temperature. Its main compounds include terbium trioxide, terbium dioxide, terbium fluoride, terbium chloride and other terbium(IV) salts. Terbium can process into foil, sheet, wire, rod, powder and sputtering target. Tb ingot is of REM 99.99% by reduction method and distillation method. The distilled terbium piece is dendritic with higher purity than reduced Tb. Tb powder is of REM 99.9% and particle size -100mesh and -200mesh. Magneto-optic disc of Tb-Fe non-crystal film can be as computer memory element, which increase storage by 10-15times. Faraday rotatory glass containing terbium is key material in processing rotator, isolator and circulator that widely used in laser technology. Especially TerFenol. Terfenol is new material that found in 70s. Half of the alloy are terbium and dysprosium. Sometime adding holmium. The balance is iron. Tb-Dy-Ir mainly apply to sonar initially, but now it gets more and more applications as fuel injection system, liquid valve control, wing adjuster, special loudspeaker and so on. Terbium metal can apply to do nondestructive inspection for welding spot of ships and pipeline.
